I want to obtain a Master of Science in
Information Technology at the Carnegie Melon University Africa
with specialization in Data Science. Right from my primary school-days when I tutored my mates to pass their Mathematics’ examinations,
through to my University days
where my work as the Secretary of the Computer Science Students’ Association(COMPSSA) made me popular with my peers
and juniors who sought my aid in their academics to my current position as a National Service Teaching Assistant at
the University of Ghana Computer Science Department, I have
always wanted to impart knowledge and help to
groom the minds of Africa’s current and future
generation. After my degree, I plan to return to my home-country
to lobby for Data Science to
be added as a career path for both IT and Computer Science students
while lecturing here, at the University of Ghana.Since I plan to stay in academia, I will have to read a PhD which I intend
to do in Data Science to
help train more Data Scientist that Ghana critically needs.
Joseph set up an internet cafe failed 4 years later had many questions. He had purchased new products, advertised and improved
service, yet the business witness no advancement. He had many questions that could
have been easily answered by Data Science through
the collection data such as the
number of people living in this area
and their age demographic, how many people use the internet, the number of cafes available,
etc. When analyzed and interpreted using structured
or unstructured scientific methods, processes, and systems, this data held all the answers. In Ghana, when people mention Computer Science, we only think of Programming, Networking or
Cyber Security. We do not see the essentiality of Data Science. It’s ability to ensure: the National and public safety through easy access to data on
convicted criminals, improvement of energy consumption if the Electricity Company had data on
illegal connections to the National Electricity Grid and better healthcare provision if we had data on population
and age demographics of a specific ailment.
I remember the first time I played Super Mario 3 in 2004, I was
hooked. From Mortal Kombat (Shaolin Monks) to
Road Rash to Need for Speed(Nitro), my love for games increased. Hence, my decision
to read General Science in Senior High School because I secretly
wanted to become a game developer whose games will have countless
female riders, fighters and players. During my final year
project, after all the processes involved in getting data for my Property Tax Registration and Payment System, I stumbled
upon Data Science. I knew I wanted
to become a Data Scientist.I never knew why I had
insisted on minoring Statistics since I had originally been accepted into the University of Ghana
as a Computer Science single-major student. I realized I had
not stayed with Statistics only because I enjoyed working with
data using R, SPSS, Excel
or MATLAB only but because Data Science had been the end game since it permitted me
to indulge both my love for Computer Science and Statistics. Indeed, courses like Sample Survey, Statistical Methods and
Programming 2 (Java and JavaScript) had trained
me for it.
As a debater, I have always had a keen edge to question conventions, always wondering if there are more efficient alternatives. My choice in applying
for Carnegie, though partly attributed to it’s ranking in Computer Science is
chiefly because at CMU-Africa,
I will gain adept industry internships and practicums. In IT, what is most important is the skills an
individual gets, how those skills can be
properly used in the job place to solve problems and this is explicitly what the practicums expose me to. As a firm
believer in giving back to mama Africa as seen in volunteering with Soronko foundation in their Tech Needs Girls programs,
the end of the month
outreach to high schools and other higher learning institutions also enticed me to CMU-Africa.
As president of my high school Science
Club, I managed to multiply the number of people
who attend club-meetings from less than 20 to 70 through the organization of an end-of-the-year party. Everyone who is familiar with Mr. Azalekor,
the club patron, will admit what a huge feat it was to convince him to do anything. Regardless of his adamant ways, I seemed
to be his favorite.Since I plan to stay in academia, I will have to read a PhD which I intend
to do in Data Science to help train more Data Scientist that Ghana critically needs. As the cell leader of my church, I competently increased the number of people who come for meetings utilizing data from extensive research to address specific
problems of members such organizing programs
that increased socialization among members like cell day out. As the
secretary for the Computer Science Department, I uncovered a more effective way of communicating with students and conducted some
informal interviews to edge members of the Department to air their views, bring these concerns to the
executive body and trying to uncover ways to solve these problems despite the limited funds available to the association.
I am a sanguine-choleric who is resilient. Though I had some challenges adjusting to the university system, hence my first semester results, I got academically stronger such
that I was awarded the General Electric Prize
for overall best female Computer Science Student in level 200. My caring
nature and inherent ability to make friends
easily made me one of the most popular students
in Computer Science and Statistics Departments. My determination, drive,
competence, love for learning and teaching have made me unforgettable to all my lecturers,
colleagues at work and the students I teach.
